HISTORIC BLACK NEIGHBORHOOD QUILT PROJECT
Stop by the Cultural Center to drop off your panel or make one with the help of the Jubilee Quilting Circle

FOOD TRUCKS AND RETAIL VENDORS
Indulge in decadent bites and shopping throughout the entire day.

KIDS ZONE
Play in the Splash Pad, fly kites, hula hoop, play games and more. In addition CLASS Bookstore will be providing a literary tent for young readers to meet the authors of their favorite books and get them signed, The Ensemble Theatre will be merging arts and science for an immersive kid experience, and the Houston Museum of Natural Science will be getting dirty with an interactive fossil experience kids of all ages will love.

PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION
Check out this year’s Public Art Installation inspired by our theme, “Crowns of Liberation”. Take photos, interact with it, and go up for the Gram, while immersing yourself in the rich history, legacies, and traditions of our culture.

Grab your partner, talk some smack, cut some books and win the title!

CROWNS OF LIBERATION PARADE
Join us in the promenade of Emancipation Park with your crowns, cowboy hats, durags, bonnets, kangols, military hats, headdresses and head wraps as we 2nd Line, Soul Train, Jig, Skip, Ease, Souf Side and Strut in a parade that honors ALL THE WAYS WE ADORN OUR CROWNS! Led by the Bayou City Brass Band the kickoff to the parade starts at 5:30pm

2025 activations

  • Historic Black Neighborhood Quilt Project

    The history of Black people in the America is one of migration. We are often moving between geographical regions throughout the country with each generation. As such, it’s impossible to escape the vast stroke of ingenious, inventive, and innovated, influence Black people have had on this country and the world. Because we are migratory, we hold our communities within our bodies. It is found in our grandmother’s hugs, our grandfather’s tool shed, our aunties cooking, the local barbershop and the candy lady’s smile. These communities’ birth stories, histories, and legacies often lost as we move through life. The Historic Black Neighborhood (HBN) Quilt Project is a way to unearth buried stories and shine more light on the expansiveness of Black people in this country. Pay homage to your Black neighborhood past or present, by creating a panel inspired by fond memories, people and/or places that reflect it.

  • Crowns of Liberation Parade

    a lively display of celebratory headwear from various Black cultural traditions, starting with the headwraps worn at early Juneteenth celebrations and other community events. Inspired by theatrical performance traditions that celebrate regional and cultural aesthetics within the Black community (HBCU dance lines, queer ballroom shows, SLAB Sundays, Bronner Brothers-style hair shows, etc.), the parade will showcase everything from church hats, durags, and kangols to cowboy hats, military hats, headdresses, bonnets and more. Inspired by The Wiz’s “I Wouldn’t Be Seen in Green” scene, this parade is all about culture and tradition.

    Themed Sweet and Savory, the Inaugural Red Foods Cookout Cookoff is a backyard brawl style cooking competition featuring 6 chefs competing to take home the coveted title, $500 and a custom Juneteenth cutting board!     Spades League HTx is teaming up with Juneteenth Houston to bring you the Juneteenth Spades Tournament — a card-slappin’, table-talkin’, event like no other!
