The history of Black people in the America is one of migration. We are often moving between geographical regions throughout the country with each generation. As such, it’s impossible to escape the vast stroke of ingenious, inventive, and innovated, influence Black people have had on this country and the world. Because we are migratory, we hold our communities within our bodies. It is found in our grandmother’s hugs, our grandfather’s tool shed, our aunties cooking, the local barbershop and the candy lady’s smile. These communities’ birth stories, histories, and legacies often lost as we move through life. The Historic Black Neighborhood (HBN) Quilt Project is a way to unearth buried stories and shine more light on the expansiveness of Black people in this country. Pay homage to your Black neighborhood past or present, by creating a panel inspired by fond memories, people and/or places that reflect it.
